Dimensional Lumber
Dimensional lumber is the ideal material for professional and DIY building and woodworking projects of all kinds. North Castle Hardwoods offers a vast selection of gorgeous premium lumber in all the most popular species. Our dimensional lumber is milled to a wide variety of convenient sizes to meet virtually any need. We meticulously sort, cut, and surface all 4 sides. Then, we rigorously inspect each board to provide our customers with only the best quality of precision-cut dimensional lumber with the most consistent grain and beautiful color.
Product Description
North Castle Hardwoods dimensional lumber is milled to remove defects and exceed our threshold for quality under the A grade of our standard inventory. Each board is surfaced for upgrading to premium S4S lumber. That means all 4 sides are sanded to create ready-to-use materials for any building project that calls for the best precision-cut lumber. The boards are ideally clear and sap-free on one face (and heart-free in white woods) with only minimal character and little to no sap on the reverse face.

The Dimensional Lumber Species We Offer
North Castle Hardwoods dimensional lumber species are chosen from forests selected for yields of the best wood texture and colors:
Black Walnut |
Black walnut is widely preferred for its superior beauty and ease of use as a woodworking material. It is moisture- and rot-resistant and contains natural antibacterial properties, which make black walnut an excellent alternative to stone surfaces for kitchens. |
Cherry |
Cherry wood is popular for furniture, cabinetry, and architectural accents due to its unique tone, beauty, smooth texture, exceptional durability, and stability of dimensions after kiln drying. We very carefully harvest, mill, kiln dry, and apply stress relief to our dimensional cherry wood. |
White Ash |
White ash is appealing for its airy, bright color, light weight, and great durability. Its open grain allows easy staining and finishing. White ash sapwood is lighter than heartwood. Both are very tough. White Ash scores among the hardest woods on the Janka scale. |
Hard Maple |
Our hard maple (sugar maple) lumber is selected for its bright color, beauty, and exceptional density, which makes it highly wear-resistant. Hard maple is popular for use where highly contrasting wood tones are desired for aesthetics, such as in restaurants and residential kitchens. |
Red Oak |
Red oak is sought for its high durability and attractive, consistent appearance. It’s very popular for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, moldings, and tabletops. Only a small percent of high-quality red oak logs we harvest meet our standards for our dimensional lumber. |
White Oak |
White oak’s high resistance to wear and decay and its heavy weight and hardness (especially the heartwood) make it popular for exterior uses, furniture, cabinetry, and tabletops. White oak is also an essential material for ship and boat building. |
The North Castle Difference – Custom Grading Rules
At North Castle Hardwoods, we apply a strict system of grading lumber for placement in our inventory. The inspection criteria are complex but are aligned with these general parameters:
A-Grade Lumber: This is fine-quality lumber that exceeds our standards for our B-Grade boards. These boards are selected for furniture building and fine wood crafts. They are ideally clear on one face, with minimal character on the other, making them ideal for projects in which both sides of the board will remain visible.
B-Grade Lumber: This is our standard premium grade lumber, cut from high-quality logs, offering better than select and better quality material for building and woodworking. These boards are clear on one side, with minimal or no sap, possibly natural character with limited or no sap on the reverse face, no surface-checking on either face, and no end-checking.
Dimensional Lumber: Our dimensional lumber is produced from boards identified during sorting as not fitting into A or B grade categories. The boards are then surfaced to become premium S4S lumber (sanded on all 4 sides), for use in top-quality building and woodworking. Dimensional lumber is precision machined, ideally clear and sap-free on one side (heart-free white woods) with a nearly clear and sap-free reverse face.
