Walnut wood boasts of luxurious beauty and incredible workability. It is an excellent choice for making fine furniture, tabletops, bar countertops, and much more. At North Castle Hardwoods, we offer superior evenly colored premium black walnut lumber, perfect for any project.
All About Our Dimensional Walnut Lumber
Black walnut wood is known for its warm, rich color that can range from medium chocolate to dark seal brown. Black walnut has a fine grain that might include lovely figure pattern. We like to call it the King of Hardwoods.
Black walnut is a very stable wood. Your finished walnut products won’t warp or shrink much compared to items made from other hardwoods. This stability makes black walnut a delight to work with, whether you’re using power tools or hand tools.
Other Names for Walnut Wood
You may see black walnut wood called eastern black walnut or American walnut or by the species name Juglans nigra. Weighing about 3.3 pounds per board foot, black walnut has medium weight and density and excellent impact resistance. Its Janka hardness rating is 1010.
Common Uses for Walnut Lumber
Although dimensional walnut lumber takes stress well, it’s important to keep in mind that it is not as hard as oak or ash. This doesn’t mean you can’t make incredible works with dimensional walnut lumber. Walnut is one of the most desirable non-exotic woods, especially for home furniture.
Great uses of dimensional walnut wood include:
- Furniture – Walnut creates stunning tabletops, dressers, chairs, and headboards.
- Cabinetry – Including both kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities.
- Millwork – Walnut is suitable for millwork applications such as moldings, trim, and wainscoting, adding a touch of luxury to interior spaces.
- Wood carving – This wood’s stability means it’s great for intricate carving and detailed woodworking projects.
- Boatbuilding – Although less common today, black walnut was traditionally used in marine applications because of its rot resistance. Today it is often used to create contrasting interior colors on yachts.
- Steam Bending – It’s also one of the best woods for steam bending!
Tips for Working With Black Walnut Lumber
American walnut responds extremely well to stains and finishes. We suggest opting for an oil finish to enhance the natural beauty of walnut wood’s grain and color. If exposed to sunlight, the color of the wood may gradually lighten in color. To mitigate or prevent this color shift in your projects, use a polyurethane finish with UV protection.
