What You Need to Know About Our Walnut Thin Stock Lumber

Our thin stock walnut lumber is a unique product, available in thicknesses of 1/8", 1/4", and 1/2". It is available in a variety of widths from 3” to 6.5” and lengths up to 48”. Pieces are finished to nominal width or wider with tight tolerances. Our thin walnut boards are surfaced on two sides (S2S) and packaged with utmost care before we ship them to your door.

Like our other walnut products, our walnut thin stock is produced from steamed and kiln-dried lumber and has a moisture content of 6-8%. It has excellent color consistency with a minimum of 95% rich brown heartwood on one face.

Walnut has a Janka hardness rating of 1,010 and weighs about 3.2 pounds per board foot. This puts it near the middle of North American hardwoods in terms of weight, density, and hardness.

Our walnut is also available as dimensioned boards and turning blanks.

Other Names for Walnut Lumber

Walnut is also called black walnut, eastern black walnut, or American black walnut. The scientific name for the tree species is Juglans nigra. It is a different species from English walnut.

We prefer to call it “the king of North American hardwoods.”

Where We Source Our Walnut Lumber

The team at North Castle Hardwoods has specialized in premium black walnut lumber for over 30 years. This product was originally developed for the demanding Japanese market, but now American woodworkers are finding it among the finest walnut wood available.

Our walnut is sourced from prime growing regions that produce the best, most consistent color and texture. The trees are select-cut using responsible forestry practices that make the forests healthier in the long run. We understand that the forests are our future, and are committed to taking great care of them. Our black walnut is grown, harvested, steamed, dried, and finished in the midwestern United States, making it truly a local product.
